Bottled Water FAQs

What are the differences between various types of bottled water?

Have you bought bottled water recently? Did you see all the different types that are now available? While there are different sources for bottled water, all water that is labeled as “drinking water” or “bottled water” is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and must meet certain standards.

According to the FDA, for a product to be considered “bottled water,” it cannot contain sweeteners or chemical additives (other than flavors, extracts, or essences) and must be calorie-free and sugar-free. Flavors, extracts, and essences — derived from spice or fruit — can be added to bottled water, but these additions must comprise less than 1% of the weight of the final product. Beverages containing more than the 1% by weight flavor limit are classified as soft drinks, not bottled water.

What is in bottled water?

The FDA defines the various types of water as follows:

Artesian Water: Bottled water from a well that taps a confined aquifer (a water-bearing underground layer of rock or sand).

Mineral Water: Contains no less than 250 parts per million of total dissolved solids (minerals). No minerals can be added to this product.

Purified Water: Water labeled as “purified” can be derived from either distillation, deionization, or reverse osmosis.

Sparkling Water: Water that, after treatment and possible replacement with carbon dioxide, contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had at emergence from the source. (An important note: soda water, seltzer water, and tonic water are not considered bottled water. They are regulated separately and may contain sugar and calories. These types of carbonated water are considered soft drinks.)

Spring Water: Bottled water derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth.

Do we offer alkaline water options?

No, we do not carry Alkaline water here at Culligan San Antonio. Culligan water in its standard form, through a bottle cooler or having gone through reverse osmosis, is no more or less alkaline than your typical bottled water you’ll find in stores. Our bodies are designed to function effectively with plain, neutral pH water. Alkaline water is defined as water that has a pH level higher than 7. The water here at Culligan San Antonio has pH levels between 6-7.

What is the difference between distilled and premium water?

Our Premium water goes through a 5-stage process of purification (reverse osmosis) and is prime for drinking. While our Distilled water is used more for steamers, medical purposes, batteries, or industrial use. Distilled water is safe to drink, but because the distillation process removes many of the naturally occurring and helpful minerals from water, using this type of water as your daily drinking water could end up causing more harm than good in the long run.

What are the pH levels in the premium water?

Culligan water has pH levels between 6-7.

What is the process our bottling water goes through?

While the process begins with municipal water as its source, the final product is far from anything resembling the tap water you get from your faucet. The finished water we bottle and deliver to our customers has gone through several distinct production stages and numerous quality checks and controls.

In very real terms, the only thing left in our water from the municipal source is H2O – Pure water, plain and simple.

Culligan Bottled Water Explained:
1. After the water is drawn from our local water supply, it is run through a carbon filter, removing chlorine and total dissolved solids.
2. The water is then sent through a water softener to soften the water and remove hard water minerals like calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals to prevent scaling inside the cooler.
3. At this point, the water is ready for primary filtration. The water is now sent through a G2 Reverse Osmosis system to filter and remove any remaining contaminants down to the size of a micron.
4. Then we send the water through an Ozonator. In this stage of the filtration process, the water passes through ozone and ultraviolet filtration to ensure the water is free of any microorganisms.
5. Now we are ready to bottle your premium filtered water and get it ready to deliver to your home.

What are our delivery schedule options?

We offer 2-week and 4-week scheduled deliveries, with a minimum of 2 bottles per delivery.
